Volunteers are needed who don't mind getting their hands in the sand. The city of Treasure Island's annual sea oat planting event is next Saturday, Aug. 20, beginning at 7:30 AM. on the beaches of Treasure Island.

This dark morph was admitted over the weekend in critical condition; upon examination our staff found a fractured radius and ulna of the right wing, a wound with active myiasis (maggots), and the bird was critically emaciated. We immediately began working to address the wound, stabilize the fracture, and begin supportive care. We are very pleased with its progress as of today and are hopeful it will continue to recover in our care. The fracture is complicated so it will require consistent monitoring and care to ensure the best chance for healing.

Short-tailed Hawks are not frequently seen in our area but they are can be found in southern Florida and most commonly in South America and southern Mexico. There are two common colorations, light morph and dark morph; the dark morph coloration is seen more often in Florida. They are specialist predators that hunt mostly birds and are excellent aerial divers.
