Getting Ready for Winter (7 of 11)
Lower Water Temperature
Can you really tell the difference between water that's 120 degrees or 140 degrees? Most people can't, so it might be a good idea to lower the temperature of your water heater 10-20 degrees to save energy and money.
Insulate Pipes
Some heat from hot water escapes through the pipe walls. This can bump heating bills as the water heater works to keep up with demands. Pipe insulation wraps around pipes and helps keep the heat from leaching out the side of the pipe saving money and ensuring water is as hot as you want it to be.

Getting Ready for Winter (6 of 11)
Buy Heavier Drapes and Rugs
Years ago, it was common to have two sets of curtains and rugs: one for summer and one for winter. Heavier drapes help trap more heat inside and keep cold air out and thicker rugs provide more cushion and heat for your feet.
Check Insulation
The insulation in your house could be in perfect condition, or it might need an upgrade -- but you won't know which is the case unless you have it checked. An energy audit usually also includes a look at the insulation and recommendations about how to treat it, but you can also call in an expert for a consultation and ask for an official opinion. Older homes typically have less-robust insulation. Depending on when your home was built and when insulation was last updated, it might be time to address it.

Getting Ready for Winter (5 of 11)
Reverse Fans
Your ceiling fans operate according to the laws of physics. Hot air tends to rise while cool air tends to sink. In summertime, they should run in a counter-clockwise direction to correctly redistribute the air in the room. Ideally, you want your fans to do the opposite in the winter. They will then push the warm air hovering at the ceiling toward the floor, where you can enjoy it. Many ceiling fans have a switch you can flip to have them run clockwise in wintertime.
Lower Thermostat
People tend to fall asleep quicker, as well as sleep longer and deeper in cool rooms, so lowering your thermostat can facilitate a better sleeping environment. This might not be something you want to do everywhere, but keeping bedrooms cool, even just overnight, can make a difference in quality of sleep and energy bills.

Close Fireplace Flue/Install Doors
Another place cold air seeps in your house is the chimney. Stop this by closing the flue to make sure no air moving through. Another option is to install glass or metal doors in front of your fireplace, leaving the flue open; the doors will block enough air exchange that your house should stay noticeably warmer, and you can still use the fireplace in the wintertime.
Seal Ducts
Ducts are channels that funnel air through your house to keep you comfortable. These can leak: if you're not sure how to handle your ducts, ask for an HVAC consultant to take a look.

Caulk Windows
A major source of drafts and air leakage is through windows. Recaulk your windows if the caulking is cracked or peeling. It's cheap and pretty easy to do!
Put Plastic over Windows
Installing plastic sheeting over windows can trap heat inside. You can buy kits at the hardware store and they're relatively easy to install. They're a cheap and effective as well as energy efficient since they still let in sunlight to warm your house.

Eliminate Door Drafts
Weatherstripping, those little strips at the bottom, top, and edges of an outside door that brush against the floor are designed to keep the air from leaking out. It doesn't last as long as the door does, so if it's cracked or patchy, replace it to ensure a good seal.

You can also place a fabric draft strip at the bottom of the door to keep warm air in, even a blanket or towel will work. The disadvantage to this solution is you have to resituate it every time the door opens, but it’s a frugal alternative to replacing weatherstripping.

Getting Ready for Winter (1 of 11)
Winter is coming and every homeowner can benefit from winterizing their home. Here are some steps to take this fall!
Drain and Store Hoses
All that greenery outside doesn’t need to be watered for a few months. If a hose has water in it and it freezes, you could end up with a split hose and needing to patch or buy a new one. Before temperatures drop too far, detach hoses from outdoor faucets, drain water out, then store until needed again.
Tend Plants
Any potted plants you want to keep safe for the winter will probably need to come indoors, especially if you don't have a greenhouse or another way to keep frost off. Also a layer of mulch spread around outdoor greenery can help protect it from the elements.
Clean Gutters
Autumn leaves can clog house gutters and the water can collect on your roof, causing damage. This can be prevented with a conscientious cleaning after most the leaves fall. You can buy screens for some gutters that will shunt off leaves but allow water to trickle in if you especially hate this chore.
