Halloween’s origins date back to the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain. The Celts, who lived 2,000 years ago, mostly in the area that is now Ireland, the UK and France, celebrated their new year on November 1, marking the end of summer, the harvest and the beginning of the dark, cold winter - a time of year that was often associated with death. Celts believed that on the night before, October 31, boundary between the worlds of the living and the dead became blurred and that the ghosts of the dead returned to earth. In Colonial U.S., the celebration of Halloween was extremely limited, including “play parties,” held to celebrate the harvest where neighbors would share stories of the dead, tell each other’s fortunes, tell ghost stories and mischief-making. By the late 19th century, the influx of new immigrants, especially the Irish, helped to popularize the celebration of Halloween nationally. Borrowing from European traditions, Americans began to dress up in costumes and go house to house asking for food or money, a practice that eventually became today’s “trick-or-treat” tradition. In the late 1800s, Halloween was molded into a holiday more about community and neighborly get-togethers than about ghosts, pranks and witchcraft. By the 1920s and 1930s, Halloween had become a community-centered holiday with parades and town-wide Halloween parties as the featured entertainment. By the 1950s, it evolved into a holiday directed mainly at the young. Between 1920 and 1950, the centuries-old practice of trick-or-treating was also revived as it was a relatively inexpensive way for an entire community to share the Halloween celebration and families could also prevent tricks being played on them by providing the neighborhood children with small treats. Today, we spend an estimated $6 billion annually on Halloween, making it the country’s second largest commercial holiday after Christmas.

-Lyndhurst After Dark & Spirited Mansion Weekend, Tarrytown: This semi-guided tour will cover the slightly darker side of Lyndhurst’s history. Meanwhile, the Spirited Mansion weekend will offer an “explore at your own pace” experience of the Gilded Age estate house, with snacks available when hunger strikes. (October 20-22&27-29)

Pennings Orchard, Warwick: open daily for apple picking. Enjoy hay rides, mazes, dairy barn tours and the newly welcomed mini cows. Stuart's Fruit Farm, Granite Springs: Family-run since 1828, this sprawling orchard offers more than 20 types of apples, including Empire, Jonagold, Jonamac, Macoun, and McIntosh, hayrides, pumpkin picking from the patch, fresh apple cider doughnuts and baked-daily apple pies. Wilkens Fruit and Fir Farm, Yorktown Heights: 2023 marks the 107th year of harvest at this fourth-generation, family-owned and -operated orchard, where 13 apple varieties decorate the branches. A pumpkin patch is also on the premises, with peach-picking at the start of fall, cut-your-own Christmas trees, and a winery to warm you up all year round. Soons Orchard, New Hampton: apple picking will be available for the fall season starting Labor Day weekend, with pumpkin picking to follow.
