PSA: NSB Utilities will be temporarily changing the form of disinfectant used in the drinking water, as a preventative best management practice to ensure the health and safety of the public water system. Beginning August 17th, 2026, NSBU will be converting from the normal disinfection agent, chloramine, to free chlorine for a period of six weeks.

During the change in disinfection time period, the utility will simply turn off the ammonia that creates the chloramine disinfectant. You may notice a stronger chlorine smell or taste without the ammonia, but no additional chlorine is added. This process is recommended by the EPA to help keep the water transmission lines in optimum condition, as free chlorine is a stronger disinfectant than the more pleasing chloramine disinfectant.

After six weeks, on September 25th, 2026, the drinking water will be converted back to the typical chloramine disinfectant. If you have any questions regarding the temporary disinfectant change, please feel free to contact Shiloh Wagers - Laboratory Manager at 386-424-3184.
