Just south of New Smyrna Beach there is a hill so large that early sailors used it as a landmark, and yet it was not made by nature at all. 🐚 Turtle Mound rises nearly fifty feet above the lagoon, and every inch of it is built from oyster shells left by the Timucua people over more than a thousand years.

For centuries, the Timucua gathered here along the rich waters of Mosquito Lagoon, feasting on oysters, clams, and fish, and piling the empty shells higher and higher until they had raised one of the tallest such mounds on the entire Atlantic coast. From the top they could watch for storms, spot schools of fish, and see for miles across the marsh and sea. The mound was so prominent that Spanish charts marked it by name long before Florida was a state. 🌅

What survives today is only part of the original. In the early 1900s much of Florida's shell mounds were carted away and crushed for road fill, and Turtle Mound came close to that same fate before it was protected. Now a boardwalk lets visitors climb to the summit for one of the finest views on the coast, standing atop the patient work of countless generations.

It is humbling to realize you are looking at a monument built one meal at a time. 🌿 Have you ever climbed the boardwalk at Turtle Mound?

Canaveral National Seashore Breaks Its Sea Turtle Nesting Record!

Sea turtles have set a new nesting record at Canaveral National Seashore. During the 2026 season, park staff and volunteers have recorded 16,813 nests along 24 miles of protected coastline. The old record was 16,812 nests in 2023, and several weeks remain in this year’s nesting season.

The nest comprises of the loggerhead, green, leatherback, and Kemp’s ridley sea turtles. Green sea turtles have played a large role in this year’s record. Their numbers continue to grow with help from protected habitat, nest tracking, predator control, and public education.

Park biologists and volunteers have tracked sea turtle nests since 1984. Their work helps more hatchlings reach the ocean and supports the recovery of these threatened and endangered species.

This new record shows why natural, undeveloped beaches matter. By protecting nesting areas, Canaveral provides sea turtles with a safe place to return year after year.
