In this week's Parashat Vayetzei, Jacob flees his home, alone and fearful, with nothing but the clothes on his back. He stops at a desolate place, lays his head upon a stone, and dreams of a ladder (sulam) connecting Earth to Heaven, with angels ascending and descending upon it.

This vision, far from being a tranquil spiritual retreat, took place in a moment of maximal vulnerability and fear.

Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks ztz"l taught that Jacob’s great spiritual encounters happened when he was "alone and afraid at the dead of night," teaching us that our greatest truths are often discovered "out of the depths." The ladder is not a geographical fixture; it is a profound lesson on Jewish identity in exile.

The ladder is anchored on the ground (aretz) but reaches the heavens (shamayim). It shows us that holiness is not limited to a single place—it must be actively built into the material world, transforming the ordinary into the extraordinary.

As Rabbi Sacks noted, the greatest challenge is not reaching the heights, but the descent—the task of carrying the spiritual insight back into the fray of daily life.

Today, we, the descendants of Jacob, carry this vision. We are tasked with building that ladder rung by rung, connecting our eternal values to the complicated realities of our modern world. Our strength is in transforming the place where we stand. Every act of defending our history, every step taken to deepen our connection to Israel, and every affirmation of our unity builds a new rung.

May we take inspiration from Jacob and carry the light of that eternal connection with us this week.
