Pattern bargaining, in which all city workers get the same percentage increases, has failed our paraprofessionals. A 3% increase translates to a much higher dollar amount for higher-paid DOE employees than it does for our paraprofessionals, so paras fall farther and farther behind. We need to address this injustice now. By pursuing a legislative solution to the problem, we would be able to give paraprofessionals a large and immediate pay bump without having our hands tied by the terms of pattern bargaining.
