Real estate professionals aren't educating anyone on this, so we ran the numbers.
Owning a 3-bedroom in Boston now costs $2,875 more a month than renting the same thing. That's $34,501 a year — before tax deductions, utilities, maintenance, or capex.
The stat that surprises people most: 82% of the first 10 years of mortgage payments go to interest. For owning to come out ahead, the home has to appreciate 4.02% a year for a decade just to tie a renter who saved the difference.
We're not saying don't buy. Homeownership is a pillar of the American dream. But families deserve to see this math before they sign, not after.
