“You never know when you’re going to be the person standing between someone and their last breath.”

For Ana Fernandez, a HELP Audubon House Manager, helping prevent overdose deaths is personal. She has seen firsthand what addiction can take from a person, their family, their friends and their community.

“So I don’t look at Narcan as just something we carry. I look at it as a second chance that we have the privilege of giving someone.”

This International Overdose Awareness Day, we recognize Ana and staff across HELP USA who are helping give people that second chance.

This International Overdose Awareness Month, we recognize the people helping save lives across HELP USA. Staff and shelter residents are taking action when it matters most while advancing overdose prevention across our communities.

Through harm reduction education, peer support, training, and access to naloxone, that work is making a measurable difference. At our Wards Island shelters, overdose incidents have decreased by 31% as harm reduction efforts have expanded.

Together with NYC Dept of Homeless Services, Foundation for Opioid Response Efforts, and EXPONENTS, we’re building on that progress and working to save more lives.

Residents at Genesis Homes got moving during the EmpowerHER Fitness Workshop with Care Captivate.

The afternoon included a fitness class, practical nutrition guidance focused on making healthy choices on a budget, and fitness starter kits for participants to take home.

Thank you to Care Captivate for bringing an afternoon of wellness and movement to the Genesis Homes community!

On National Nonprofit Day, we’re reminded that making an impact can start with something as simple as a backpack.

At HELP Haven, creative arts therapy gives children and teens a space to express themselves, explore their creativity, and simply enjoy making something of their own.

For one teen, that means drawing and painting.

“Drawing and painting are my hobbies. When I’m drawing, I’m just enjoying it.”

Spades, musical chairs, a pie-eating contest, and some serious T-shirt creativity!

Last week’s HELP USA Annual Picnic gave staff from across the organization a chance to come together, have some fun, and enjoy a little friendly competition.

At WestHELP Family Shelter, Housing Specialist Rasiel Garcia helps families navigate the path to permanent housing, from identifying affordable housing opportunities to working through the steps it takes to get there.

For Rasiel, the work is also about being a source of encouragement for families during what can be a difficult and uncertain time.
