Juneteenth – also known as America’s Second Independence Day – honors the day when Maj. Gen. Gordon Granger, along with roughly 2,000 Union troops, came to Galveston Bay, Texas, to proclaim to the over 250,000 enslaved Black people up and down the state they were free.

This took place after then-President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863, roughly about two and a half years later.
