Market Monday. Buying a house around here is a lot like dating, and every county has its own style.

Kent County is speed dating. The median purchase price is $360k, and homes go under contract in about 11 days. Show up ready, know what you want, and don't play hard to get.

Muskegon is the second date. $275k median purchase price, about 17 days on market before a contract. You've got time to get to know the place, but not so long that someone else swoops in.

Newaygo is meeting the parents. $270k median, about 22 days before a contract. Walk the property, check out the pole barn, ask the real questions.

Mecosta is the long, easy courtship. $235k median purchase price, about 31 days on market before a contract. Take a second showing, bring the family, and picture where the Christmas tree goes.

Whatever your style, buyers have more homes to pick from right now than a year ago in all four of these counties.

Market Monday. Quick road trip, no gas money required.

Start in Kent County. The median purchase price is $361k, and homes are going under contract in about 11 days. In other words, if you fall for one on Saturday, you're probably writing an offer Sunday.

Head west to Muskegon. $275k median purchase price, 17 days on market before a contract. You get the lake, and you get a little time to think.

Swing north to Newaygo. $271k median, 22 days before a contract. Room to breathe, room to compare, and probably room for a pole barn.

Keep going to Mecosta. $235k median purchase price, about 31 days on market before a contract. That's roughly $125k under the Kent median, with plenty of time to walk through a home, ask questions, and picture your stuff in it.

Same state, same winters, four very different ways to buy a house this fall.
