Why file for a homestead exemption? Making sure to file for a homestead exemption on your primary residence in Georgia may significantly reduce property taxes. Doing so will lower the assessed value of your home, protecting a portion of your equity and lowering what you pay in property tax (take the opportunity to use the difference of money saved in taxes to pay down your principal!). There are also oftentimes additional exemptions for seniors, disabled veterans, or surviving spouses that you won't want to miss!
