The City is partnering with Waste Management (WM) to host a free drive-through E-Waste and Household Hazardous Waste (https://bit.ly/3Rq86zv) Collection on Saturday, October 8 from 9 to 11 am in the City Hall parking lot. This provides residents with a free, safe and convenient way to properly dispose of hazardous items.

Proof of residency will be required with a valid identification card and residents must remain in their vehicle at all times. No business waste or walk-ups will be permitted. There is a limit of 125 pounds or 15 gallons per vehicle, and each container must not exceed 5 gallons.

Hazardous waste are products that are flammable, corrosive, reactive or toxic. These products are dangerous to the public and the environment and must be disposed of properly. It is illegal to dump hazardous waste in a trash container.

Acceptable items include pool chemicals, household cleaners, garden chemicals, paint products and thinners, thermometers, fluorescent light bulbs and tubes, batteries, and electronic items.

Do not bring sharps, smoke detectors, ammunition, appliances larger than microwaves, asbestos, construction materials, leaking containers, pressurized cylinders, fire extinguishers, trash, explosives, radioactive waste, tires or biomedical waste.

Mission Viejo residents and businesses can destroy their sensitive documents during the free drive-through Document Shredding event on Saturday, October 1.

Hosted by Waste Management and the City's Public Works Department, the event is from 9 to 11 am (or until truck capacity is reached) in the Mission Viejo City Hall parking lot at 200 Civic Center.

Residents and businesses can bring up to five banker-size file boxes worth of paper records for immediate shredding. Proof of residency is required. All documents and boxes should be free of binders, paper clips, plastic sleeves and metal butterfly clips.

Items not accepted include CDs, credit cards, three-ring binders, wire dividers, newspapers, magazines and spiral notebooks. For safety reasons, all patrons must remain in their vehicles until serviced. No walk-ups will be permitted.

The City Council on Tuesday, September 13 (https://bit.ly/3qpqUE6) will recognize outstanding members of the City's adopted troops and receive updates about an E-bike Safety Plan as well as an enhanced recreation center, among other business.

For their outstanding efforts on behalf of the City’s adopted Headquarters Battalion of the 1st Marine Division at Camp Pendleton, Lance Corporal Darren Villanueva will be feted as “Marine of the Quarter” and Corporal Lorenzo Garcia as the “Non-Commissioned Officer of the Quarter.”

Chief of Police Services Chris McDonald will give a presentation about an E-bike Safety Plan and Director of Recreation and Community Services Mark Nix will talk about the exciting and much-needed improvements at the Montanoso Recreation and Fitness Center.

Since September is Hunger Action Month, John Ralls, a Board Member of Second Harvest Food Bank of Orange County, will discuss the needs of countless families throughout the region and how folks can help.

Along with presentations, Council members will also consider replacing the old heaters in the dog kennels ahead of winter at the Mission Viejo Animal Services Center to ensure the homeless dogs stay warm.

The public portion of the Council’s September 13 meeting starts at 6 pm in the Council Chamber at 200 Civic Center. Presentations begin shortly after 6 pm, followed by the public comment portion of the meeting and the consent calendar.

The Mission Viejo Animal Services Center is hosting a “Piggie Party” this month – offering residents the chance to add a furry friend to their homes for free.

Throughout this month, all guinea pig and rabbit adoption fees are waived, and adopters will receive party favors with each adoption.
