We are recruiting for full- and part-time dispatcher positions in several of our divisions statewide.

Dispatcher duties include, but are not limited to, operating a multi-channel radio system; receiving and transmitting all information promptly, accurately and in a professional manner; answering an emergency and non-emergency multi-line computerized telephone system; entering and retrieving information through a Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) terminal; responding to inquiries and complaints; and securing emergency assistance.

Dispatchers must have at least a high school diploma or GED and be willing to work rotating shifts, holidays and weekends.

Have you heard about the new program launched by our partners at Newport News Fire Department this morning? The program, Pulsepoint, has two apps, Pulsepoint Respond and PulsePoint AED.

PulsePoint Respond interfaces with the City’s dispatch system and alerts CPR-trained citizens when someone is experiencing sudden cardiac arrest in a public place within a quarter mile of your location. Once alerted, citizens can go to the location to assist and possibly help save a life, thereby reducing the number of deaths by cardiac arrest.

PulsePoint AED provides users with an active display of all registered AEDs in the area. Citizens can use the app to report and update AED locations so that emergency responders and nearby citizens trained in CPR can find an AED close to them when a cardiac emergency occurs.
