Wondering how long it really takes to build a new home with a production builder like Stanley Martin?
Here’s what the process actually looks like from contract to keys.
1. Pre-Construction (2–6 weeks)
You’ll choose your floor plan, lot, and design package. Most options are already pre-approved. The good news? Permitting and utilities are often underway before you sign, so things move quickly.
2. Site Prep and Foundation (2–4 weeks)
The lot is graded, plumbing lines are installed, and the foundation is poured. This part depends on the weather, but builders usually have tight schedules to keep things on track.
3. Framing and Exterior (4–6 weeks)
Walls go up fast because materials are pre-ordered and crews work on several homes at once. This is when your home starts to take shape.
4. Plumbing, Electrical, and HVAC (3–5 weeks)
Behind-the-walls systems are installed, inspected, and tested before drywall goes up.
Your agent and the builders rep will help you track when each phase is completed.
5. Interior Finishes (6–8 weeks)
Drywall, cabinets, flooring, and paint bring your home to life. This is when you’ll see your chosen design package come together.
6. Final Touches and Inspections (2–3 weeks)
Appliances are installed, the yard is landscaped, and the builder does a final quality check before inviting you to your walkthrough.
7. Final Walkthrough and Closing (1–2 weeks)
You’ll mark any last-minute fixes with blue or purple tape, confirm everything meets your expectations, and close on your loan.
From contract to keys, most builder homes take 6–8 months to complete, sometimes less if you choose a home already under construction.
