As part of our ongoing series about the history, preservation, and evolution of notable architectural landmarks (particularly in Newport, Rhode Island) here is a short article about "Seaweed Cottage," that was originally built in 1860: https://a4arch.com/a4-spotlight-the-history-and-transformation-of-seaweed-cottage . Seaweed Cottage (c.1860) photographed from Spouting Rock Beach. Seaweed: A Newport Treasure Transformed Seaweed Cottage, perched dramatically above the Atlantic at the very southern end of Newport’s celebrated Cliff Walk, stands as an example of a quietly distinguished property in a city often kno...

You know you need an architect, but which one? Since A4 Architecture only serves the Rhode Island and New England region, you may need to hire another firm than ours. This article will help you understand what to REALLY look for and has a helpful (and free) downloadable checklist: https://a4arch.com/how-to-choose-an-architect . We wish you a successful search. Richard Morris Hunt was a notable architect of the late 19th century who did much of his most innovative work in Newport, Rhode Island. One particular aspect of his designs was creating double and triple height spaces through which his decorative stairways became sculptural elements. Here is a short article on some of the staircases that he designed, which helped elevate what was largely just a simple architectural device to get people from one floor to another up to the level of art:

Richard Morris Hunt (1827–1895) is one of the most noteworthy architects of the last half of the 19th Century. One of his important contributions was transforming American architecture from a simple stacking of plans into a more three-dimensional synthesis of horizontal and vertical spaces. One of...

One of our most important jobs as architects and designers is to explain to potential customers the value of our services. The desire to cut corners and save money on an expensive undertaking can be very strong, but here is a short article explaining why cutting back on the architectural and design fees is perhaps the worst way to try to save money on a building project: https://a4arch.com/the-value-of-an-architect-why-professional-design-pays-for-itself . Thank you for reading, liking, commenting and sharing this post.

When planning a building project, whether a new home, a commercial space, or a significant renovation, the temptation of an owner to skip the architect and go straight to a contractor is understandable. Architects cost money, and budgets are tight, but this logic is short-sighted. Hiring a licensed....

No city was more representative of the Gilded Age than Newport, Rhode Island and no family was more impactful in shaping that era than the Vanderbilts. William Henry Vanderbilt, the primary heir to the fortune founded by his father, had eight children. Four of them built enormous "summer cottages" in Newport, which helped give shape and character to the city of that time. Here is a short article on the subject of those Vanderbilt children and their extraordinary architectural impact, not just Newport but on that era of American Architecture: https://a4arch.com/a4-spotlight-newports-vanderbilt-buildings-the-gilded-age . Thank you for reading, liking, commenting, and sharing this post.

During the Gilded Age, Newport, Rhode Island, transformed from a quiet summer retreat into a glittering stage for America’s “industrial royalty.” At the center of this transformation was the Vanderbilt family and the houses they built and owned. While Commodore Cornelius Vanderbilt built the f...

It isn't just the great stately homes open to the public in Newport that get decorated for Christmas. It is also many of the private houses, ranging from mansions to Colonial Era cottages, that participate in the "Christmas in Newport" tradition of putting white lights in the windows, including one of our favorite renovations: Beachmound. Here is a short article on the subject: https://a4arch.com/a4-spotlight-christmas-in-newport-ri-2/. Thank you for reading, liking, commenting on, and sharing this post. A new biography of Vincent Scully Jr., who was a popular and influential architectural historian who taught at Yale from 1947 until 2007, was recently completed by A. Krista Sykes, PhD. The Newport Architectural Forum (Facebook Affiliates), the Yale Association of RI and the Harvard Club of RI brought her to Newport, where Scully began his academic career with his books "The Cottage Style" and "The Architectural Heritage of Newport," to discuss this enlightening new biography to a sold-out audience at the Redwood Library and Athenæum (1747), America's oldest lending library and an important milestone of architecture in it own right. Here is a video the was produced of that presentation: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O9d6ZD7sCHw Thank you for watching, commenting and subscribing to our channel, if you find this interesting or informative.

Just below the level of "National Historic Landmark" (of which there are only 2500 in the U.S.) are the buildings and objects listed on the "National Register of Historic Places" (of which there are more than 80,000). Newport has more than 40 of these structures including the Charles Baldwin House: https://a4arch.com/a4-spotlight-the-history-and-significance-of-the-charles-baldwin-house/ This structure sits across the street from the Isaac Bell House and was an important step in the transition from the Queen Anne Revival Style to the invention of the Shingle Style.
