Newport will step back in time this summer when the Weekend of Coaching returns Aug. 15-17, bringing 19th-century elegance back to the City by the Sea.
Hosted by The Preservation Society of Newport County with the Coaching Club of America, the triennial event will feature 11 historic horse-drawn coaches, each pulled by a team of four expertly trained horses. The coaches will make their way through Newport’s streets and mansion grounds, offering the public a rare chance to see a tradition once beloved by America’s Gilded Age elite.
Each day will feature scheduled routes, and on Saturday, Aug. 16, visitors can enjoy a free driving exhibition on the lawn at The Elms starting at 10:30 a.m. Maps and route details are available at NewportMansions.org.
“Every three years, we look forward to the return of Coaching Weekend,” said Trudy Coxe, the Preservation Society’s CEO. “It’s a true spectacle, and I hope everyone enjoys the beauty and grandeur of this vanishing tradition.”
The lineup of “Whips,” or drivers, includes well-known names in the sport such as S. Tucker S. Johnson, Frances Baker and World Equestrian Games gold medalist Misdee Wrigley Miller.
Events kick off early with a “Behind the Scenes” panel Aug. 14 at Rosecliff and online, featuring Miller, Coaching Chair Walter Eayrs, and Melissa Warner, driving manager for Johnson.
Coaching dates back to 18th-century England, evolving from mail delivery to a prestigious sport that found a home in Newport during the Gilded Age. Families like the Vanderbilts and Belmonts made it part of their summer season, arriving at races, polo matches and the Newport Casino in open-air Road Coaches and Park Drags.
