Over 50 and Looking for a House in Kentucky?
Buying a home after 50 can look a lot different than it did when you were 30. You're probably thinking less about having the biggest house and more about how well the house fits the life you want to live.
Here are 10 things worth considering:
1. Accessibility — Fewer stairs, a first-floor primary bedroom, easy-entry showers, and a floor plan that could still work well years from now.
2. Low Maintenance — Less grass to mow, fewer exterior repairs, newer mechanical systems, and a property that's easier to take care of.
3. Outdoor Space — Maybe it's a covered porch or patio. Maybe it's a garden, a workshop, or several acres. The question is: How do you want to spend your time outside?
4. A Quiet Neighborhood — Less traffic, less noise, and a little more breathing room can become increasingly valuable.
5. Everyday Convenience — How far are you from healthcare, groceries, restaurants, shopping, church, and the places you visit regularly?
6. Easy In and Out — A beautiful neighborhood can lose some of its appeal if you have to fight heavy traffic every time you leave home.
7. Predictable Expenses — Look beyond the mortgage payment. Consider property taxes, homeowners insurance, utilities, HOA fees, and anticipated maintenance.
8. Community & Connection — Are there opportunities to hobnob with the neighbors, make friends, volunteer, attend events, and stay socially connected?
9. Things You Enjoy Doing — Golf, pickleball, walking trails, gardening, fishing, hobbies, restaurants, travel, or simply having enough room for the family to come over.
10. Being Close to Family — For many people over 50, being closer to children and grandchildren starts becoming more important than being close to work.
The big question isn't simply:
“Do I like this house?”
It's:
“Will this house and this location fit the way I want to live for the next 10, 15, or 20 years?”
That's a very different way to buy a house.
