Ok ,Sunday/Monday storm you have my attention now.

As you've already likely heard from the great team at NEWS CENTER Maine, the storm that is going to pummel the Mid-Atlantic has slowly shifted farther north. (Not "further north", my English teacher would be proud.)

It still looks like a bigger storm for southern Maine and the coast compared to farther inland but it's getting more interesting. The southern third of the state certainly has the potential for a nice 6-12."

Timing is Sunday afternoon, evening through Monday. Stay tuned!

And no, you should not turn off the heat before you leave.

Mid-Atlantic / Northeast Overview:
Dry weather will remain the dominant theme through much of next week as a strong area of high pressure builds over New England. Temperatures will trend above normal from Sunday through Tuesday, before a cold front shifts through and brings a cooler air mass for the second half of the week.

Impacts:
No significant storm-related issues are expected in the near term, though ongoing drought conditions will continue to be a concern across the region.

Rainfall Outlook:
A Slight Risk of Excessive Rainfall has been posted for much of North Carolina on Saturday into Saturday night. A mid-level low drifting toward the southern Appalachians will help enhance rainfall in that corridor, while areas farther north remain mostly dry.

Looking Ahead:
Once this system clears, the overall pattern returns to dry and stable conditions heading into next week. After that, our focus may need to shift back toward developments in the Tropics as we warch two systems.

Here they come! Love those Fall colors!

Looks like a decent soaking Thursday, with most of the rain falling in the afternoon.

Around 1" is a good bet for most of the state with locally higher amounts. Less than 1" is expected in northern Maine.

The latest drought map just came out, and no surprise...it's not great.

FIRST LOOK AT SUNDAY...

I realize we did not get as much snow as forecast today. We had a faster changeover to a mix. Two things about the next storm: 1) It will be stronger with more moisture. 2) We'll have another mix to sleet and freezing rain to deal with.

* Timing: Snow develops in southern/western Maine Saturday night. It slowly moves into the rest of the state early to mid morning Sunday. It lasts through the day and ends Sunday night into early Monday.

* Type: Snow to start for everyone. Snow likely changes to SLEET (ice pellets) during the midday in southern Maine, and during the afternoon in central and eastern Maine. There may be some freezing rain, but it looks like the warm layer above the surface will be thin enough, so those raindrops can refreeze into sleet pellets before hitting the ground. Sleet is a pain to clean up, but freezing rain is what clings to trees and power lines and can cause outages. Still, that is a risk.

* Amounts: How quickly the changeover from snow to a mix, and how far north, will impact these totals. If it were all snow, we'd all be looking at about a foot! In this case, we think the switch to sleet and freezing rain will limit snow totals in central and southern Maine. Farther north, especially in the mountains and northern Maine, mostly or all snow is expected.

This is a first call, so please follow our updates as we get closer. Any time there is a changeover involved, just a couple of hours can make a difference, as we saw today.
