I walked into the job and thought my plumber had a shower valve sitting where the sink was supposed to go. 😂

So naturally I asked him what the hell he was doing.

Turns out there was a method to it.

We had just installed a brand-new tub, and instead of doing all of his soldering right beside it, he assembled the valve away from the tub first and then installed it once everything was ready.

Our superintendent normally installs tub protection after the tub goes in, but the plumber was already on site knocking out his work before that happened.

Small detail. Smart move.

And that’s one thing I like about being on these jobs: every trade has little tricks they’ve picked up from years of doing the work.

Sometimes the best thing I can do is just ask:

“Why’d you do it like that?”

That’s Builder Logic. 🏗️

One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned in construction: getting a permit isn’t just about knowing the building code. You also have to know the municipality. 🏗️

You can take essentially the same type of project from one Metro Atlanta jurisdiction to another and encounter different applications, different terminology, different plan requirements, different checklists, and sometimes completely different processes.

On projects I’ve worked on, I’ve seen differences ranging from additional HVAC and plumbing plan requirements, to EV-charging provisions on new construction, to specific life-safety requirements based on the design and conditions of the property.

And sometimes the hardest part isn’t even complying with the requirement.

It’s figuring out what they’re actually asking you for. 😂

A document or process may have one name in one jurisdiction and be called something completely different somewhere else.

That’s why one of the first things I do when preparing a permit package is find the municipality’s checklist for that specific permit type and work through it line by line.

Don’t assume because you’ve successfully permitted the same type of project somewhere else that the next jurisdiction wants the exact same package.

Same construction industry. Same building codes in many cases. Very different permitting experiences.

And trust me… learning that after you submit can cost you weeks.

If you’re a homeowner planning a major renovation or new construction project, permitting is one of those parts of the process where experience navigating the local jurisdiction can matter just as much as knowing how to build the project.
