Norfolk State University School of Business Launches IRS-Sponsored VITA Program to Empower the Norfolk Community

Norfolk State University (NSU) School of Business is proud to announce the launch of its IRS-sponsored Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program. This initiative connects academic learning with meaningful community service by providing free, professional tax preparation services to eligible members of the Norfolk and NSU communities, helping individuals and families file their taxes accurately while reducing the cost of tax preparation.
“The impact of the VITA program on the community is significant because it provides a vital financial service to those who might otherwise struggle to navigate the complexities of tax season,” said Dr. Atems, Dean of the NSU School of Business.
Through the program, IRS-certified volunteers provide free tax preparation services for individuals and families with a gross income below $69,000, helping them save money on filing fees while ensuring their returns are prepared accurately. Volunteers also assist taxpayers in identifying and claiming all eligible tax credits, such as the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), which can significantly increase refunds for low-to-moderate-income households. In addition, the program facilitates fast and secure refunds through direct deposit, making the filing process more convenient and efficient for taxpayers.
Operating at the NSU Innovation Center in downtown Norfolk, the VITA site will provide services every Wednesday through April 15 on an appointment basis, offering a trusted and accessible location for residents of Norfolk and surrounding communities to receive free tax preparation assistance.
Dr. Atems continues, “This initiative reflects our commitment to both academic excellence and community engagement. By participating in the VITA program, our students gain valuable hands-on experience while providing a meaningful service to the community. Programs like this strengthen the connection between the School of Business and the people we serve, while preparing our students to become responsible and impactful professionals.”

I’ve been following Virginia bill SB48. Here is the scoop. It has passed both House and Senate. The Governor is going to sign this…. I can’t see why she wouldn’t. It extends the waiting period from 5 days to 14 days, before landlords can send notice of noncompliance. (Familiar with the 5 day pay or quit notice?) That one. It will go from 5 days to 14 days. New York has this standard now.
