"FALLEN THROUGH THE CRACKS:" HOMELESSNESS FOR ADULT MEN OVER 50
Adults over 50 represent the fastest-growing segment of the homeless population. For men in this demographic, homelessness often begins suddenly following a job loss, divorce, or the death of a partner.
Because many of them are on fixed, low incomes, they are priced out of the housing market.
The Core Challenges
1) First-Time Homelessness: Many men in this group have worked their entire lives but lack a safety net. Stigma often prevents them from seeking help until they are already on the streets.
2) Premature Aging: Life on the streets drastically accelerates physical decline. Men in their 50s often present with chronic health conditions, mobility issues, or cognitive decline typically seen in much older individuals.
3) Systemic Incompatibility: Standard emergency shelters are frequently ill-equipped to handle the medical or physical needs of older adults, often lacking accessibility features or long-term case management.
