1. Inspect & Seal Drafts– Check around windows, doors, and baseboards for cold air leaks. Use weatherstripping or caulk to seal gaps and keep heating costs down.
2. Service Your Heating System– Schedule a furnace or boiler tune-up, replace filters, and make sure your heating system is working efficiently before the first freeze.
3. Protect Pipes from Freezing– Insulate exposed pipes, especially in basements, attics, and garages. Let faucets drip slightly during extreme cold to prevent bursting.
4. Clean Gutters & Downspouts– Remove leaves and debris so melting snow and ice can drain properly, reducing the risk of roof damage.
5. Reverse Ceiling Fans– Switch ceiling fans to rotate clockwise on low to push warm air down into the room.
6. Check Insulation Levels– Ensure your attic and walls have sufficient insulation to reduce heat loss and lower energy bills.
7. Stock Up on Winter Essentials– Have salt or sand for icy walkways, snow shovels, and emergency supplies like blankets, batteries, and non-perishable food.
8. Test Smoke & Carbon Monoxide Detectors– Heating systems and fireplaces increase the risk of CO buildup and fires, so make sure detectors are working and batteries are fresh.
