Trash info!

💨💨

We’re hoping winds are a little less intense today but waste collection will be carried out as normally scheduled for customers.

Windy weather conditions can cause certain challenges regarding the collection of solid waste materials for curbside customers. The high velocity winds can blow trash out of the polycarts, and completely knock them over if the weight of the cart is light. To help reduce the risk of potential trash debris scattering, incurring possible injuries, or losing poly cart(s), the City of Norman has provided a few steps to help mitigate these issues:

* If a polycart is less than 60% full, the homeowner should consider waiting until the next week’s service to set the cart out for service.
* If possible, please return polycarts at your residence back to a secure location for storage as soon as they are emptied to avoid the possibility of the cart blowing away.
* Please be sure to not overfill the poly cart because trash will more than likely blow out from the cart.
* Please try to bag lighter items (having more of a likelihood to blow out in high winds) with heavier items to help prevent the possibility of these items blowing out from the cart; please try to level the load in the poly cart as much as possible.
* Please make sure lid is closed completely whenever the poly cart is set out for service.
* To avoid lid fly up while placing a polycart, do not push or pull cart with the lid opening opposite of the wind. Utilize the wind direction to your advantage and face the lid opening away from the wind while rolling the cart to the curb.

Displaced carts that are happened upon can be collected and phoned into the Solid Waste Division at 405-329-1023 for proper location identification and return.

Let those faucets drip!

A drip? A stream? Just how do you prep your pipes for winter weather? Here's our ultimate guide on how and when to drip in anticipation of this weekend's deep freeze.

These instructions should be typical for most homes. Please use this as general guidance.

* Only drip where pipes are along an exterior-facing wall (see below the video link for specific info on hot-cold dripping)
* Keep cabinet doors under sinks open to allow warmer air to circulate
* In some instances, you may wish to wrap your pipes or use insulating covers available at big box or hardware stores.
* Drip at a slow, steady rate or a small stream no wider than a pencil lead or strand of dry spaghetti (about 2-3 mm.) - See instructions in our video below.
* If your house has a basement or crawl space, wrap exposed water pipes to insulate them against freezing.

CHECK OUT THE LINK BELOW FOR VIDEO INSTRUCTIONS.

The faucet we used for the video has dual hot-cold handles. If yours has a single handle, turn on the hot water first until hot water begins to flow, then bring the handle into the middle so both hot and cold flow at the same time. Then, lower the pressure to a small stream no wider than the lead of a pencil or strand of dry spaghetti (the lowest steady stream possible.)

A prolonged stretch of bitter cold is about to settle in, temperatures are likely to stay below freezing for an extended period. That means melting will be slow, and impacts could linger for several days after the storm ends. Cold like this can be hard on plumbing, so now is the time to prepare.

Steps to help prevent frozen pipes:
• 🚰 Let faucets stream slowly (especially on exterior walls)
• 🚪 Open cabinet doors under sinks to allow warm air to circulate
• 🧊 Cover or insulate exposed pipes, outdoor spigots, and crawl spaces
• 🔥 Keep your thermostat set to the same temperature day and night
• 🏠 Seal drafts around doors, windows, and where pipes enter the house
• ❄️ If leaving town, never turn the heat off, set it no lower than 55°

A little prep now can save you big headaches later. I’ve definitely been there before.
