I get this question often.
Why can Joe Schmoe mow lawns so cheap?
Why does so and so have no minimum?
Why is their labor so cheap?
Most likely, because they have almost no overhead, and that is typically because they are not legitimate.
Why hire a licensed and insured landscaper?
* Hiring an unlicensed or uninsured landscaper can leave you, the homeowner, open to financial risks and, at the very least, with headaches, and regret.
Risks of working with an Uninsured Landscaper
Landscaping is a very unpredictable and sometimes dangerous business—damage to both property and workers can occur.
Hiring a licensed and insured landscaper, gives you peace of mind, that if something happens. It will be rectified, and taking care of immediately. With no expense from the homeowner.
*What if a rock gets thrown up, from a weedwacker, and shatters a house window, sliding door, vehicle, etc. A uninsured company, most likely, will not be able to fix it, making the homeowner responsible for repairs.
We have heard stories of it happening, many times, and it’s unfortunate.
*A insured company, will take care of that window, door, vehicle, etc. like it never even happed.
With the amount new companies in the area, and the more, we see each year.
Sadly, a lot of them are unlicensed, uninsured, unregistered with the city, nor DOT compliant, etc…
So, of course you can choose the cheaper company, but we wouldn’t recommend it.
-Why is Joe Smoe, so cheap?
-An unlicensed, uninjured landscaper will probably have cheaper rates.
But ,it’s dangerous to let cost alone be your deciding factor.
If your landscaper doesn’t have proper insurance, you may be:
* Responsible for injuries that occurred on your property
* Unable to recover costs for property damage caused by your landscaper
You should have peace of mind knowing that your landscaping company carries adequate insurance—you won’t have to fear risking your bank account should the project go awry.
Additionally, a well-insured company indicates that it operates professionally, openly, and legally.
When hiring a landscaper, don’t be hesitant to ask them for their COI (Certificate of insurance), or, call the City, or Town, the company is located at, and see if they have a Business Certificate.
If a landscaper appears disturbed by your questions about insurance, consider it to be a red flag. As their potential client, you have every right to ask what insurance they are covered by because your protection depends upon it.!!
Insurnace is there to Protect You, your property, and the people who work on your property, as well as the workers themselves.
PLEASE HIRE A LICENSED AND INSURED LANDSCAPER.
Here is a few things to look for:
Do they come in a company labeled truck?
Are they Commercially Plated?
Do they have a visible DOT Number on their Truck
Can they provide a COI ?
Do they have a business license with the City?
Can you write them a check to their business name?
Just a few helpful questions, you can ask them.
The ones that have no overhead, because they’re not doing it legally, are the ones that destroy the industry for the rest of us. The cost of running a legitimate landscaping business is expensive.
We are and have always been licensed, insured.
Plus DOT Complaint for safer roads.
ANY landscaper, or any business pulling a trailer must have a DOT NUMBER. Truck and Trailer Gross over 10,001 lbs. (which is basically every single truck, and trailer combination out there.) This keeps equipment and drivers off the road, that should not be on the road.
There are quite a few, high quality, reasonable landscapers, in our area. Please make sure to pick the right one!
Have a Fantastic Day!
