More than an exhibition, this is an invitation to reflect on whose stories shape our understanding of place, identity, and history.

250 Years from Mr. Freedman, by Fletcher Williams III, invites us to see Charleston through a different lens, where history, memory, and imagination come together to tell stories that have too often been left untold.

Working with reclaimed materials deeply connected to the city’s past, Williams transforms everyday objects into powerful reflections on freedom, resilience, and belonging. Through the fictional figure of Mr. Freedman, he expands historical narratives with folklore, ceremony, and possibility, reminding us that memory is not only preserved, it can also be reimagined.

Marking 250 years of the USA through the lens of the Lowcountry.

See a collection of archival moments from the Historical Navy Yard Charleston, reflecting over a century of labor, resilience, and daily life on the waterfront.

Current Photo - Year: 1945

An energetic moment on V-J Day (Victory over Japan Day) in August 1945, marking the end of World War II. Thousands of service members were stationed at or passed through the Charleston Navy Yard, bringing a monumental wave of relief and a definitive emotional finale to the yard’s most intense industrial era.

Year: 1941

Mrs. Richmond P. Hobson christens the official Launching ceremony of the USS Hobson (DD-464), built right at the Charleston Navy Yard (which would soon enter combat in the Atlantic and Pacific). Coming just three months before the attack on Pearl Harbor, this event underscores the yard’s critical defense acceleration program as the nation prepared for war.

Year: 1918

A transition towards reinforced concrete industrial architecture defined the modernization and physical expansion of the shipyard during the early 20th century. This image captures the literal building blocks of the yard’s logistics and manufacturing backbone being poured into place.

Year: 1945

In this photo, the ship taking on cargo is the high-speed transport USS Ray K. Edwards (APD-96) during the last few months of World War II. An operator drives an industrial forklift of heavy red canisters up toward the ship, while an officer and a Navy WAVE (Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service) check off a manifest on a clipboard.

Year: 1918

Camp Bagley was established as a temporary training extension of the Charleston Navy Yard to handle the massive, unprecedented surge of recruits during World War I. This photograph highlights the rapid mobilization and makeshift base infrastructure required to feed, house, and train thousands of newly minted sailors on the yard’s grounds.

Year: Between 1939-1945

As thousands of men left for active duty in World War II, the Navy Yard recruited women to fill intensive industrial roles. Margaret “Peggy” Merigo became a trailblazer as the first female welder to receive an official rat

An evening where hospitality took center stage. Navy Yard Charleston welcomed our community for its Summer Social with an exclusive preview of Riva Mare’s wood-fired pizzas ahead of the restaurant’s rooftop opening this fall, accompanied by a live performance from the North Charleston POPS!.

Set against one of Charleston’s most historic waterfront destinations, the evening reflected the culture, creativity, and momentum continuing to define Navy Yard Charleston.

Featuring Riva Mare, North Charleston POPS!, and Building 64, with furnishings provided by Celadon Home for the courtyard.
