Yes, charity can absolutely be part of an estate plan.

You can leave a gift through a Will, a trust, a beneficiary designation, or sometimes another planning strategy depending on the asset and what you're trying to accomplish. The right method may also depend on whether you want to benefit family first, charity first, or both.

If giving has been important to you during life, there's no reason that goal has to disappear at death.

September 11, 2001 is one of those days most of us will never forget.

We remember the loss, the fear, the courage, and the way people came together when it mattered most.

It doesn’t take much for families, communities, and even our country to end up divided. But days like this remind us that what matters most isn’t pulling apart. It’s standing together, taking care of each other, and remembering who we are at our best.

Today we remember those who were lost, those who served, and those who showed extraordinary courage in the middle of tragedy.

Sometimes networking looks a lot like having breakfast.
Wednesday Business Spotlight: Lakeshore Leaders

Yesterday, we got out of our normal meeting space and went to breakfast together.

Most weeks, we talk about what we do, what kind of referrals we’re looking for, and who we know that might be able to help someone else.

That’s really the point of a networking group. You get to know other local business owners, learn what they do, and over time you know who you trust enough to send people to.

And every once in a while, we do it over breakfast.

Owning a house doesn't automatically mean you need a trust. It also doesn't automatically mean a Will is the best answer.

The right plan depends on what you're trying to accomplish. Do you care about avoiding probate? Do you want someone to manage property for a beneficiary? Do you own more than one piece of real estate? Are there family issues that make an outright inheritance a bad idea?

A trust is a tool, not a merit badge for people who have reached a certain level of adulthood. Sometimes it's useful. Sometimes it's unnecessary.

Being married doesn't mean your spouse automatically has unlimited authority to handle everything in your name.

A Power of Attorney lets you choose who can act for you, what they can do, and sometimes what they can't do. That matters when a bank, title company, or financial institution wants actual legal authority instead of a marriage certificate.

Backups matter too. If your spouse is the person you planned to act and something happens to both of you, your children don't automatically become replacement agents just because they're your children.

The time to find out your plan has a hole in it isn't while someone is standing at a bank counter being told no.
