What to do to winterize your home

1. Insulate & seal your home
Check attic insulation and ensure it’s adequate (for example, in the DFW area R-30 to R-49 is suggested) so warm air stays in and cold stays out.

Seal drafts around windows, doors, baseboards, and especially in exterior‐facing walls or where plumbing runs.

Inspect your roof and gutters: clean out debris so rain or occasional ice doesn’t lead to leaks or pooling.

2. Protect your pipes & plumbing
Insulate indoor pipes located in unheated areas (attics, garages, crawlspaces) and exterior walls.

Cover outdoor faucets/hose bibs with foam covers – helps prevent freeze damage.

Know where your main water shut‐off valve is (and the city meter valve) so if you have a burst pipe you can quickly stop the water.

In a sudden sub‐freezing event, leave cabinet doors open under sinks to allow warm air to circulate and maybe let faucets drip slowly (especially on exterior walls) so ice doesn’t build up.

3. Manage outdoor systems & landscaping
For irrigation/sprinkler systems: while North Texas doesn’t always require a full “blow-out,” you should reset the controller for winter, check freeze sensors, and if pipes have above-ground components, make sure they’re insulated.

Disconnect garden hoses, turn off & drain (or set minimal) sprinkler systems so water doesn’t freeze in pipes “just because you forgot.”

Prepare outdoor plants: move potted plants indoors / cover sensitive plants / mulch around root areas.

4. HVAC, heating and safety checks
Have your heating system (furnace / heat pump) inspected, change air filters, and make sure everything’s working efficiently. Cold snaps here can cause systems to work harder.

Test smoke detectors, carbon monoxide detectors, and ensure you have working flashlights / backup power options (since unexpected outages can happen).

5. After a cold event / freeze
Once things thaw, inspect your home for signs of damage: look for wet spots, listen for unusual sounds in plumbing, check water meter for unexplained usage.

If you turned off major systems / drained some lines, bring them back online carefully and test everything.
