Thank you, Governor Larry Rhoden, for authorizing state firefighting resources to help our local communities fight this fire. We’re grateful to all the firefighters and first responders working to keep our communities safe.
Spearfish Lookout Fire update from South Dakota Department of Public Safety Bob Perry:
I just spoke with Jay Wickham (WLF Chief). Fire crews are currently focused on the southeast side of the fire, which is moving toward homes. There are only a few homes in the immediate area that would be difficult to defend, but a larger development is located over the hill.
Spearfish has ordered a cautionary evacuation for homes southeast of the fire. Residents are not being forced to leave at this time, but the sheriff has restricted access to the area, meaning those who leave cannot return for now.
The good news is the fire is no longer running as aggressively as it was, and significant resources are being used to attack it, including three large air tankers and other aircraft. Efforts are showing positive results, and crews hope to significantly knock the fire down this evening.
The biggest concern is tonight’s forecast of 30–35 mph winds. Without the wind threat, Jay said he would be fairly confident in their position. However, strong winds could cause spotting and allow the fire to move quickly.
For now, crews feel their efforts are producing positive results and are hopeful the significant resources on the fire, along with additional resources ordered, will continue to slow its movement.
