Important reminder! 💡
In the days following Hurricane Helene, many people were and continue to be without power. This leads to food loss and the need to dispose of foods that were not kept at safe temperatures.
When cleaning out a refrigerator or freezer, it is always best to throw food, condiments, and other refrigerated goods in the trash instead of pouring them down the drain. Fats, oils, and grease can be found in many common foods, such as mayonnaise, pesto, and salad dressings. When fats, oils, and grease go down the drain, they can solidify and cause clogs. As a reminder, homeowners are responsible for any plumbing costs incurred due to clogged drains.
It is also important to think critically about the safety of any food stored in the refrigerator or freezer following a power outage. If you have any doubt about a food staying at food safe temperatures (40° F or below), throw it out. South Carolinians without homeowners or renters insurance may be eligible for FEMA disaster relief funding to help you purchase food to replace your loss. Those with renters or homeowners insurance may be eligible for food loss reimbursement depending on their individual policy.
