Largest turtle I have rescued! I found this beauty at the beach in North Cape May and helped it across the street. Fortunately just one house away there was a safe place for this turtle.

What to do if you come across a turtle:
1.Prioritize Your Safety: Pull your car safely onto the shoulder, turn on your hazard lights, and only step into the road when traffic is clear.

2.Follow the Turtle’s Lead: Place the turtle on the side of the road it was already facing. If you turn it around, it will simply cross the road again to reach its destination.

3.Never Relocate: Do not take the turtle home or drive it to a different pond/woods. Turtles rely on specific home territories and taking them away disrupts their survival.

4. Handle with Care: For most turtles, safely pick them up on either side of their shell (like a hamburger) between the front and hind legs. Never pick a turtle up by its tail or legs.

The Delaware Bay hosts the largest spawning population of these creatures globally. Their eggs fuel the epic migration of threatened shorebirds, while their unique blue blood is essential for manufacturing safe, bacteria-free vaccines and medical equipment.

These living fossils hold together a complex web of relationships in the ecosystem – a critical link in coastal biodiversity. Every spring, horseshoe crabs lay millions of eggs. When females are abundant, they lay more eggs than can fit deep in the sand, resulting in floating eggs that will never hatch but instead feed shorebirds, fish, turtles, and other wildlife. Without the excess eggs, New Jersey’s migratory shorebird population is in peril.
