Reposting these home safety tips for dealing with extreme cold.

Cold weather is sweeping your area. To help avoid potential damage to your home caused by freezing temperatures, we recommend taking the following precautionary steps:
Turn the thermostat up to keep your home slightly warmer than usual.
Open cabinet doors so heat can reach water lines along the exterior walls in the kitchen, bathrooms, etc.
For water lines and water heaters in the attic, open the attic hatch so heat can get in.
Leave faucets running very slowly, three to four drips per minute, so water continues to move through the lines.
Insulate water lines that are in unheated areas like garages/attics/basements.
If you have a pool, drain its water lines.
Disconnect hoses from outdoor hose bibs/faucets.
Find your home's water shut-off valve and know how to use it.

Spams and scams are everywhere, or so it seems these days. From scam phone calls to unsolicited letters to incessant text messages, it's a challenge to know what's true. Here is my advice on the best course of action to take for this scenario.

People are visiting your vacant lot.

Advice: This is a scary one. Scammers are posing as sellers and contacting real estate agents to list and sell vacant land without the knowledge of the real owner. All communication is online or by phone. To protect the ownership of your vacant property or any real estate, sign up for Land Notifications or Fraud Guard if offered by your county. Spams and scams are everywhere, or so it seems these days. From scam phone calls to unsolicited letters to incessant text messages, it's a challenge to know what's true. Here is my advice on the best course of action to take for this scenario.

A tree service company shows up to cut down your tree.

Advice: Watch out for this one. Scammers are contacting tree service companies through online forms to request tree removal, generally at vacant properties. The scammer sends a fraudulent check with an overage to pay the bill, asking the tree company to send the overage on to someone else. The check bounces, the tree company is out some money, and the property owner has lost a tree. Stay aware of scams, scammy activities, and speak up if something seems off.

A letter arrives saying your home warranty is expiring.

Advice: Be wary of unexpected expiration notices. Contact your home warranty company directly or check your online account for the status of your plan. Put a recurring monthly or yearly notice in your calendar app to review your home warranty and renew. If you don't have a home warranty, I recommend you consider getting one as a budget-based approach to appliance maintenance.

Nice to have a safety net. A home warranty is a common part of a real estate transaction. The cost is around $600 per year and covers appliances, mechanicals and other components of a home.
