A lot of homeowners assume they're years away from having ""real"" equity. The numbers say otherwise.

According to ATTOM's latest U.S. Home Equity Report, more than 4 in 10 mortgaged homes in the country are equity-rich. That means the owner owes less than half of what the home is worth. Not paid off, not decades in. Just past the halfway mark, often sooner than people expect.

If you've written off selling because you figure you haven't built up enough, that's an assumption worth testing. You might be standing on more than you think.

Labor Day is the one holiday built entirely around the value of work, so we'll keep this simple.

The house you're sitting in exists because of work. Someone framed it and wired it. Someone hung the drywall you never think about and moved on to the next house. The neighborhood around it runs on people who show up, most of them without any applause.
