10 things that surprised me moving from Pensacola to Oak Harbor ⚓️ (PCSers, this one’s for you)
Great Lakes ➡️ Pensacola ➡️ NAS Whidbey. Here’s what I wish I’d known:
1. The weather. I went from 80-degree nights back to chilly ones, and I didn’t have the clothes for it. Pack layers. 🧥
2. Transportation. Pensacola had cheap, plentiful taxis that picked me up at the barracks. Here, Uber is sporadic and taxis are pricey. 🚕
3. Walkability depends on where you live. In Oak Harbor city limits, it’s walkable and bikeable. On base or out rural, it’s a pain. 🚲
4. There are two bases. The main base has the commands and barracks, and the seaplane base has housing and the Navy Exchange.
5. Fewer things to do on base. No club, no museum, no beaches. You’ve got a bowling alley, a movie theater, and the gym. 🎳
6. The outdoors make up for it. Everyone says the PNW is amazing for outdoorsy people, and it’s true. 🌲
7. Way fewer people on base. It’s an aviation base, so it’s much smaller than the training base.
8. Cost of living. In a lot of areas it roughly doubled from Florida. 💸
9. Small-town life. I’m a suburbs girl, so a town where you actually recognize people took some adjusting. Oak Harbor is a hybrid, and I don’t mind it, but it was a shock. 🏡
10. Road trips. In Pensacola you could pop over to Atlanta, New Orleans, or Gulf Shores. Here, the next state is a 5-hour drive in any direction. 🚗
