On January 31, 1878, the iron steamship Metropolis ran aground on a sandbar just off Currituck Beach, North Carolina, during a violent winter storm. The ship had left Philadelphia loaded with construction workers and supplies bound for Brazil, and within hours of striking the bar, mountainous surf began tearing the hull apart while people onboard clung to whatever wreckage they could reach.

Local residents and lifesaving crews fought through brutal surf conditions to rig lines to the wreck, and their efforts saved dozens of lives, but the disaster still claimed somewhere around 85 people, many of them workers who had signed on for what they thought was a routine voyage south. The scale of the loss shocked the country and became one of several wrecks along this stretch of coast that pushed Congress to expand and professionalize the US Life-Saving Service in the years that followed.

The Outer Banks earned its reputation as the Graveyard of the Atlantic one wreck at a time, and the Metropolis is one of the disasters that quietly reshaped how this country protected people at sea. ⚓

ON THIS DAY...

On July 11, 1942, USS NORTH CAROLINA (BB-55) entered Pearl Harbor wearing her Measure 12 camouflage, just weeks after the pivotal Battle of Midway. Over the months that followed, she would join the Pacific Fleet in the long campaign across the Pacific, earning 15 battle stars for her World War II service.

🇺🇸 The 2026 4th of July Celebration in Southport is almost here. Start planning your commute in and out of Southport now.

‼️Traffic patterns for after Fireworks. Plan ahead. N Howe Street converts to “2 Lanes” out of town, (using the center turn lane as a second outbound lane), this allowing traffic to flow faster. There will be one lane of traffic flowing into the City. (👮) Officers will be stationed along the route at several traffic control points, to assure you are in the proper lane, and the route remains safe.

‼️ The Right lane out of town is for (133, BSL, Leland etc.)

‼️ The (center turn lane)out of town is for (RiverMist, Oak Island, Saint James, Bolivia, etc.).

‼️Moore Street will carry traffic out of town, (left) on Leonard St, (right) on Rob Gandy to River Rd/133.

🚧Jabbertown Rd and Dosher Cutt-Off Rd will be closed to local resident traffic only.
🚧 Turtlewood Dr will be CLOSED to local traffic only at both entrances.

Please “pack your patience”….. as it takes a little while to get traffic SAFELY out of the city.

Yes, we have alligators in Southport. Friendly reminder to stay alert, keep a safe distance, and NEVER feed or approach alligators, which are most active at dawn and dusk. Keep pets on leashes away from water edges, supervise children, and report to 9-1-1 any concerns or nuisance gators.

🛑Keep Distance: Maintain a safe distance (at least 60 feet) if you see an alligator, as they are fast on land.

🛑Never Feed: Feeding alligators is illegal, dangerous, and causes them to lose their fear of humans.

🛑Pet Safety: Keep pets on a leash and away from the water's edge, as they can resemble natural prey.

🛑Swim Safely: Only swim during daylight hours and in designated areas.

Nuisance Alligators: If an alligator is in a threatening position, or in an unusual spot, call the 9-1-1, or our APS Office, (910) 477-1486.
