With temperatures dropping below zero, a few simple steps can help prevent frozen pipes, costly damage, and emergency repairs. Here are the most important things every homeowner should check during extreme cold:

🚰 Protect Your Plumbing
Let faucets drip slightly, especially those on exterior walls.
Open cabinet doors under sinks to allow warm air to circulate.
Place space heaters near plumbing in exterior walls, basements, or crawlspaces (keep at least 3 feet from anything flammable).
Make sure outdoor spigots are fully winterized, and hoses are disconnected.
Know where your main water shutoff is—just in case.

🔥 Maintain Heat
Keep your home heated to at least 55°F at all times, even if you’re away.
Avoid turning the thermostat down overnight during extreme cold.
Make sure vents are open, and your furnace is running properly.

🏠 Exterior & Safety Checks
Clear snow and ice from furnace and dryer vents.
Seal obvious drafts around doors and windows if possible.
Use space heaters safely—never unattended and never overloaded on one outlet.
Test smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.

🏚️ Vacant or Second Homes
Physically check on vacant properties or have someone do it for you.
Confirm the heat is on and running.
Consider shutting off and draining water lines if the property will remain vacant.
