East Tennessee is great because we get to experience all four seasons. The cycle of life is evident here. The natural world wakes up in the spring, cruises through the summer, prepares in autumn, and sleeps in the winter. The rat race of life is easy to ignore for a few minutes at a time here, if you just slow down and look around.

This was our first family home. We bought it when Marley was 2, thinking we were Chip and Joanne of the Smokies. 10 years and a ton of work later, we decided to move on to get Marley around a more diverse population for his teenage years. I loved that old house and we made a lot of great memories together there.

Hot Rods 50s Diner in Alcoa feels like somebody turned a collection of old signs, classic cars, neon lights, and cheeseburgers into a restaurant.

It’s colorful, unpretentious, and exactly the kind of local place I’m always glad to find in East Tennessee.

I caught this sunset shortly after we moved from Clinton to Oak Ridge. It was a big change going from the farm to the townhomes, but the sunsets are breathtaking up on this ridge. East Tennessee is just a nature lovers dream. I can get used to anything here.

During COVID, I was just looking for a playground where Marley could get outside and be a kid.

Clinton kept their playgrounds closed, but Cove Lake State Park was open.

What started as a place to let Marley play turned into one of my favorite places in East Tennessee. Even now, I still love coming back to walk the trails, watch the lake, and slow down for a little while.

Funny how some of your favorite places find you when you're not even looking for them.
