Just returned from LA where we were able to take a tour with Laura, owner of Architecture Tours LA. She is an amazing architectural historian and the perfect tour guide to lead us through the Frank Lloyd Wright homes in LA.

We began the tour at the 1920's Hollyhock House. It is a seminal example of Mayan Revival architecture, blending ancient Mesoamerican temple design with modern, organic principles. I love how he used the owner's love of Hollyhocks to create the geometric design that is imprinted in the concrete stones, embedded in the stained glass and the furniture he designed.

One of my big takeaways was to understand the power of using compression and expansion in architecture. The contrast is stunning in how Frank Lloyd Wright would create compression at the entry of his homes that shifts once one walks through the doors giving an emotional and physical expansion of self in his homes.

Thank you Laura for another great tour. If any of you are heading out to LA, I highly recommend a tour with Laura. She is amazing.
