At SF Business Times’ Oakland Structures event, the consensus was undeniable – Oakland is on the upswing.

The city is attracting large-scale investment, with many major projects set to come up in Uptown and West Oakland, and federal dollars slated to bolster infrastructure as well.

Riaz Taplin shared the stage with Paul Paradis of Hines, Michael Ghielmetti of Signature Development, and Regina Davis of SUDA to discuss Oakland's future.

Riaz Capital welcomes Essie Ligabue to the team as an Interior Designer.

In past roles, Essie has worked on two headquarter renovations and built a conference center, even working from ideation to opening day on coffee shops on the west coast. Essie then started her own company, creating visual designs for luxury residential clients.

At Riaz Capital, Essie is responsible for developing, planning and managing FF&E (Fixtures, Fittings and Equipment) procurement and implementation. Combining her expertise in commercial and residential spaces will be key to developing premium quality, aesthetically-pleasing Bay Area workforce housing.

The housing crisis in the Bay Area has not been kind to teachers - 60% spend more than 30% of their income on rent, and almost half of them plan to leave the Bay Area in the next 5 years.

The Teachers Rooted in Oakland (TRiO) program aims to recruit and retain teachers, by offering them affordable housing and monthly stipends. The program began as a pilot in 2020 and is now primed for expansion, helping over 100 teachers.

The expansion was announced by Mayor Libby Schaaf on September 29th. In the 9 years of the pilot, over 50,000 students will benefit by learning from fully credentialed STEM and Special Education teachers.

The first stage of the pilot has already supported 3x the number of teachers as before. With TriO, we aim to keep providing affordable and quality housing for teachers in the Oakland Unified School District.

We're all smiles as we take over and soon, makeover, Z Hotel - located at 233 Broadway in Oakland's Jack London Square.
This 102-door hotel will be transformed into around 130 apartments for the middle-income urban workforce, as we work to solve the Bay Area housing crisis.

With acquisition closed on a landmark property, all of us at Riaz Capital are thrilled to embark on this journey together.
