Being a professional, dedicated inspector, and a good-natured person sometimes really sucks.

Case in point: A homeowner that I know is currently being ripped-off by a jack-ass "I can make it happen" kind of guy (not even a licensed contractor). This pertains to an elevated hillside (down-slope) structure, which has been red-tagged by the local building authority.

No permit(s) for new construction/renovation of the existing structure, and virtually every detail of the new work that I see is just plain wrong. Like stupidly wrong. Lazily wrong. Incomprehensibly wrong... and yet the homeowner is innocently paying for it.

I just want to scream, but I can't. I don't want to get involved in this sh*t-show. It's not my battle. But it still really sucks.

I can't stress enough that homeowners need to verify that their "contractors" are qualified to do what they're doing, and that their work should be reviewed once complete, by someone like myself.

At this home, the jetted fiberglass tub of the master bath has been set (and only partially so) on a base of expanding foam insulation.

So what's the problem?

The fiberglass tub, when filled with water and with someone in it, may flex slightly. An improperly or insufficiently supported tub like this can develop cracks due to that stress, which can result in concealed leaks and subsequent interior water damage (especially troublesome, if it's at the upper floor of the home as this is).
