🐭⚡ Home Inspection Surprise of the Day Potomac Illinois⚡🐭

Most outlets I inspect have dust, maybe a little paint, and occasionally a missing cover plate.

This one came with its own electrician.

Unfortunately, he appears to have been conducting unauthorized troubleshooting and is no longer accepting service calls.

Finding: Deceased mouse discovered inside an electrical receptacle.

Implication: Rodents are attracted to warm, protected spaces and can damage wiring insulation, create fire hazards, and leave behind biological contaminants. Also, this particular mouse learned firsthand why electricians respect electricity.

Recommendation: Remove the rodent, inspect the receptacle and surrounding wiring for damage, and repair or replace components as needed. Evaluate the home for signs of active rodent activity and address entry points.

🔍 Remember: Home inspections uncover a lot of things… but finding a mouse literally “plugged in” wasn’t on today’s bingo card.

Spent part of the day inspecting a deck in Clinton Illinois and it’s a good reminder why deck safety matters more than most people realize.

National statistics show thousands of injuries are linked to deck and porch failures every year, and many collapses trace back to poor construction practices, deteriorated framing, or improper ledger attachment to the home. Some experts estimate that up to 90% of deck collapses involve ledger board connection failures.

The scary part? A lot of these decks “look fine” from above. Meanwhile underneath, you may find:

* Improper fasteners
* Missing flashing
* Rot hidden behind the ledger
* Corroded hardware
* Undersized framing
* DIY modifications that were never properly supported

Deck failures often happen during parties and gatherings when the structure is under heavy dynamic load — exactly when nobody expects a problem.

A backyard deck shouldn’t turn into an accidental trap door.

That’s why inspections matter — especially on older decks throughout Central Illinois where many were built before current construction standards or have seen decades of Midwest moisture and freeze/thaw cycles.

We would like to extend our deepest condolences to the family, friends, and form colleagues of Steve Cornett following his tragic passing.

Steve was more than a customer to us — over the years, he became family. He was someone we respected deeply, and his loss is felt throughout our entire team. Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife, Char, his children, and everyone who knew and loved him during this incredibly difficult time.

This tragedy is also a heartbreaking reminder of the dangers roadside workers, construction crews, truck drivers, tow operators, and first responders face every day while simply doing their jobs. Too many lives have been lost because drivers fail to slow down, stay alert, and move over when approaching emergency scenes, work zones, and stopped vehicles along our highways.

Please remember: Slow Down. Move Over. Pay Attention. It’s not only the law — it’s about protecting lives and making sure workers and families make it home safely.

We ask everyone to keep the Cornett family in your prayers.

There are worse office views than this. 🌊🏡

This inspection in Paris, Illinois came with peaceful water views, a cool breeze, and one of those reminders that not every day has to feel rushed. While most people see a relaxing lake house… I’m still spotting flashing details, checking roof fasteners, and making sure the important stuff is doing its job. 😅

That’s the funny part of being a home inspector — even in the calmest places, the brain never fully shuts off.

Still… I can’t complain about this “office” for this day.

Termites out here really said, “Go big or go home.” 🐜🏗️

I’ve seen mud tubes before… but these things look like the termites installed their own interstate system complete with express lanes and frontage roads. At this point they’re not pests — they’re UNION CARPENTERS.

Nothing says “active wood destroyers” quite like mud tubes thick enough to need their own ZIP code. These little cellulose addicts didn’t just visit this garage… they established a whole subdivision.

You know it’s bad when the termites are walking around like:
“Sir, this is OUR structural support now.” 😬

The wild part? They built these skyscraper-sized tubes one grain of dirt at a time while homeowners everywhere are still trying to finish one bathroom remodel from 2017.

🚨 Reminder: Mud tubes this large can indicate long-term activity and should never be ignored. When termites start building dirt highways to the attic, it’s time to call the pros — not just say a prayer and hope the house remains load-bearing.

Inspection today in Clinton and folks… this support post is one stiff breeze away from becoming a historical landmark.

I’ve seen more stable relationships than this column.

Whoever “repaired” this apparently walked outside with:

* one busted block
* half a shovel of concrete
* zero supervision
* and the confidence of a man who says “that ain’t goin’ nowhere” right before disaster strikes.

This entire structure is being supported by:
✨ cracked masonry
✨ gravity
✨ bad decisions
✨ and the unwavering power of denial

The post isn’t even sitting ON the support anymore. It’s basically hovering there out of pure spite.

And let’s talk about the lean. That thing’s got more angle than a politician during election season. If it leans any harder, it’s gonna start telling people about “the good ol’ days.”

At this point the chicken wire is providing emotional support.

Somewhere deep in the building, every board is whispering:
“Brother… I’m tired.”

Remember: just because it’s still standing doesn’t mean it’s structurally sound. Titanic floated too.
