Have you ever noticed after brushing your teeth and you catch a whiff of sewage?? You might have S-trap down below. Don’t worry, it’s curable and no its not what you think. S-traps is that Super Mario plumbing systems under your sink and it looks like a “S”. These fixtures have been around for over 2 decades, but over the years it’s been prohibited under all codes. This is because the “S” trap will siphon or suck water out from the trap which will end up releasing methane (sewer) gases into the home. Over the years building products are making it where the average homeowners could do basic repairs. Heck…. I could run to the local hardware store, buy the S-trap and install it myself. Quick easy and done. Knowing how to install something correct is everything. You learn something new, plus you avoid that awkward situation where your dinner guests thinks it’s the tuna noddle casserole that’s giving your bathroom that smell.

Seeing this more and more. Post undersized, no joist hangers, joist has a single toe nail on both sides, load of the entire porch relying on deck screws, landing for the 90 degree turn constructed wrong, 4x4 (which should be a 6x6) in the wrong spot which will support the vertical load and guard post sways back and forth. All that in 2 pictures.

I can’t speak for everybody, but we use our back deck just as much as our dinning room, if not more. So knowing that my family and friends are standing on a structure that is safe and built to last is very important.

Bathroom vents should be terminated outside. Running it to the basement, you’re just creating more problems.
