Red flag days! Dead and dry and windy. Not a good combination. Be careful!
February 10, 2026: **🚫🔥 MANDATORY BURN BAN ISSUED FOR MARION COUNTY 🔥🚫**
Marion County has issued a mandatory burn ban, effective today through Tuesday, February 17, 2026. Following the recommendation of the Marion County Multi-Agency Wildland Task Force, Carl Zalak, Chairman of the Marion County Board of County Commissioners, signed an emergency declaration enacting the ban.
The mandatory burn ban is due to recent freezing temperatures combined with dry and windy conditions, which continue to exacerbate and threaten wildfire activity throughout Marion County. This measure is necessary to protect the health, safety, and property of the citizens and visitors of Marion County.
All outdoor burning is prohibited with the following exceptions:
• Outdoor cookers or grills, as long as they are attended by a responsible adult at all times while in use
• Commercial land clearing, only when inspection, review, and approval have been granted on a case-by-case basis by the Florida Forest Service or Marion County Fire Rescue, and sufficient fire suppression personnel and equipment are on scene
• Final authorization must be granted by the Florida Forest Service
Firefighters urge all citizens to take the following precautions during the burn ban:
• Delay all outdoor burning until the ban is lifted
• Dispose of yard debris at Marion County’s landfill or recycling centers
• Immediately report arson or suspicious activity to law enforcement
• Do not throw cigarette butts from vehicles
• Use extreme caution when mowing or operating equipment that could spark
• If you see a fire or a large column of smoke, call 911 immediately
The Marion County Multi-Agency Wildland Task Force was formed shortly before the unprecedented 1998 wildfire season. Over the last decade, firefighters and public safety professionals from local, county, state, and federal agencies have met regularly to discuss wildfire conditions, call volume, manpower, suppression tactics, and public education efforts.
The task force will continue to meet frequently and keep citizens informed of any changes in wildfire conditions.
