HWY 17 Corridor Transformation is a new chapter for Carolina Shores

If you have driven down HWY 17 near Persimmon Road and Emerson Bay Road recently, you probably noticed the activity.

The landscape is changing, and for residents of Carolina Shores, it signals a new era of growth and convenience.

This area is now home to the largest commercial development to date; a massive, 171,000 SQFT Walmart Supercenter.

While large scale construction always brings change, it also brings a new level of accessibility to Southern Brunswick County.

You may have heard the statistic that roughly 90% of all Americans live within 10 miles of a Walmart. WalMart is a retail giant that has become a staple of modern life for its sheer efficiency and is North Carolina's largest department store retailer with 192 locations. This total will be reached with the opening of the Carolina Shores store in October 2026. Following Walmart are Belk with 65 stores and Target with 57 stores in North Carolina.

For the locals, this means that the "unmatched convenience" of a Supercenter will soon be right in their own backyard. Whether it’s a quick pharmacy run or a full grocery haul, having a major hub nearby promises to save them all a little more time in their busy schedules.

This isn't just another Walmart store that was built, but a modern facility designed with today’s shopper in mind. Construction began in the Fall of 2025, following the site plan approval by the Carolina Shores Board of Commissioners on June 10, 2024.

A shopper can expect a full service Walmart Supercenter with about 171,000 square feet of retail space; a drive thru pharmacy and a
10-bay fuel station.

This development is not happening in isolation.

This Walmart Supercenter is the anchor to a wider transformation along the HWY 17 corridor.

A stones throw away to the south of the Walmart Supercenter is The Commons at Carolina Shores. This retail hub is expected to be a one-stop-shop destination for the community.

Groceries: A new Publix.
Dining: McDonald's and Cutty’s.
Services: Chase Bank, Great Clips, a new nail salon, and a local dental office.

As this community continues to grow, it brings a mix of emotions.

This is a huge transition for this quiet corner of Brunswick County, but it’s also a sign of a vibrant future. This influx of investment means more local jobs and expanded access to daily necessities.
