On February 4th we asked the community to share their thoughts and ideas about the new logo that will soon represent us.. I posted 4 options and the feedback was really exciting. When I started designing the logos, Joe had really been determined to do a full-blown modernization and going in a direction that felt more attributed to HIM and that's understandable. The property and building date back to 1962 but he's only owned it for a few years and it's natural that he'd want to make it "his". His ideas and excitement over the project were very grand and he envisioned neon and LED signs and I was the exact opposite. He's all cool blues and I wanted fire.
Strangely enough, though, we also had polarizing viewpoints of the original Westerly logo and sign, even the colors. Joe loves them and I absolutely hated everything about them. I hated the font. I hated the colors. I hated the symbols. I just could not wait to scrap it all. So, it's weird that as he would sketch ideas for me to design from, his examples were so different, not just from the originals but all the way across the board. He wanted to include everything and would get so excited that every idea was different from the last. For me, the challenge of balancing old and new was important because although I want it to represent Joe, I also wanted it to still be the Westerly.
But that god-awful font.
The seafoam green.
The asterisks. For no reason, why are there asterisks?
So I started fairly simple and tried to keep it minimalist and when we posted the examples there was an overwhelming response from all of you who wanted the retro feel and the origins more prominently reflected. I was really really surprised and I read each and every comment across every platform where it had been shared and I started taking some notes and then I got out the laptop and got to work.
I'm hoping that these better encompass the spirit of the Westerly. I tried very hard to modernize retro, a polarizing and challenging objective that maybe makes no sense but it makes perfect sense to me and I hope I pulled it off. I also wanted to not just represent Joe or the historical property but Ocean Shores as well. Because it is the very biggest part of this. I have a very clear favorite out of them and I actually cried when I made it because it felt so perfect to me.
Of course, Joe was delighted and got all extra and immediately suggested adding more eagles and can you put a salmon in the bear's mouth? I think he literally wanted to see every single detail of all of Ocean Shores in this little logo.
Thank you for the suggestions and your input. I absolutely love to hear your voices and I hope that one of these four will suit you guys and that you'll be able to See what I was trying to show in each design. Share your vote via comment or reacting in each pic... This is it. One of these will be on our signage and stamped onto letterheads, shirts, brochures, ads... And maybe it won't reach the celebrity status of, say, the golden arches or the two-tailed mermaid but whichever one you pick, it'll make a damn fine addition to a coffee mug.
Thank you for helping us out. We really really mean it.
