A lot of us have passed by old inns and wondered what stories the walls could tell. In New Jersey, that question gets a little more interesting when the building has been standing since the colonial days and has seen more than its share of late nights.

Heavy woodwork, narrow halls, and creaky floors have a way of making you pay attention. Throw in Prohibition-era secrets, old staircases, and rooms that have heard a few things over the years, and the hair on your arms starts to notice.

If you grew up in New Jersey, there's a good chance summer meant Italian ice in one of those little paper cups.

Before fancy frozen desserts took over, this was the taste of a Jersey summer.

Italian ice traces its roots back to Sicilian granita and was brought to America by Italian immigrants in the late 1800s and early 1900s.

The frozen treat became especially popular in New Jersey, New York, and the Philadelphia region, where it became known as "water ice."

New Jersey actually has a special place in Italian ice history.

One of the earliest Italian ice businesses in America, DiCosmo's, was founded in Elizabeth in 1915. Another longtime favorite, Little Jimmy's Italian Ices, started in Elizabeth and Linden in the 1930s, selling Italian ice from trucks and carts to factory workers and neighborhoods throughout the area

For a lot of us, though, the history isn't what we remember. We remember the little paper cup sweating in the summer heat, trying to eat it before it melted down the sides, and arguing over whether lemon, cherry, blue raspberry, or rainbow was the best flavor. Some memories just taste like summer

Windows cracked open just enough to let that aggressive breeze in, fan still running like it’s July, and you’re wrapped up like a burrito thinking, “yeah… this is perfect.”
