SSH lovers, here is some Ocean View local news!

The owner of 1776 Steakhouse is taking the iconic brand south. Regan Derrickson is planning to open a second location in Ocean View. The new steakhouse will take over the current Big Fish Grill site at 30415 Cedar Neck Road.

"Eric Sugrue [from Big Fish] reached out about the property," Derrickson said. "I thought, yeah, 1776 would do great in that area. It doesn't cannibalize the Midway location, and everyone knows the name." Derrickson bought the flagship 1776 Midway location from Tom Holmes in 2025. He remodeled the interior over the winter, reopened in March and transformed the popular steakhouse into a more upscale experience.

"It's two stories, 222 seats. The first floor will have a jazz-piano feel, more energy on the first floor. There will be a lower-volume, more intimate feel upstairs," he said.

I have just received word from Senator C***s' office that the Ocean View Post Office will now undergo a rebuild rather than repair. I am told the project will now begin in the spring of 2027 with a targeted completion later that year in the fall.

While I appreciate receiving the update, the seemingly lack of urgency from anyone at the United States Postal Service or our federal delegation is infuriating. Representative Ron Gray and I have sent numerous communications requesting information, suggesting short-term solutions (such as the old Rite Aid location), and demanding action.

I was told by Senator C***s that the rehabilitation would begin early June. Well, we're nearly in July and have just been given this latest update.

This is unacceptable. If the building is truly in such disarray, and if USPS refuses to go along with any of the common-sense short-term solutions Rep. Gray and I have offered, then the rebuild must begin immediately. The community has gone long enough without their local post office and it is beyond time to get this completed.

We are pleased to announce the 2026 summer tour schedule for the Historic Village in Ocean View. The Village will be open every Wednesday this summer (10AM - 1PM), starting May 27 to September 2 (closed on July 1).

Here is a glimpse of what you will see in the Village:

* Civil War-era Tunnell-West House: A new feature this year is an antique player piano, recently donated to the Village; docents will demo the piano.
* Ocean View's first freestanding post office: Built in 1889 when Ocean View became incorporated as a town; originally located on Central Avenue and operated by Annie West Betts, who also ran a millinery shop in the rear of the building.
* Replica of Cecille Steele's chicken: Learn about our most famous Ocean View resident, who pioneered the broiler chicken industry.
* Hall's Store: Replica of general stores in the area when Hall's Store was in operation, built and operated by William S. Hall in 1820; Hall's Store was the original name of the town of Ocean View.
* Coastal Towns Museum - Featuring the history of coastal towns in the surrounding area, one of the oldest barns in Sussex Country, a woodhouse built in 1904 and restored by a local Eagle Scout, and a three-holer outhouse (what a treat!).

Tours are free and donations are graciously accepted. The Village is directly adjacent to John West Park, 32 West Ave, Ocean View, Delaware. Parking is available around the park. No need to register in advance for a tour. Hope to see you this summer!
