*** Placed with Long Island Pit Stop Animal Rescue ***

“Me and my friend Ace were tied to a hydrant and abandoned. Then when we got to the shelter, we tried to keep them from separating us, but we failed. Now I don’t know if I will ever see him again.”

She was adopted years ago. And sadly, she is back. But CHELSEA is still as wiggly and sweet as she ever was, but she doesn’t forget this place and how unhappy she was to be there. Now she cries and screams if she has to leave her kennel, probably equal amounts of anxiety and trying to find Ace, and she has had the experience of having a perfect life and losing it not once, but twice! She was first surrendered back in December of 2020! The shelter taking its toll on this wonderful girl. She needs out, and she has only 48 hours to find the family who will never abandon her again. Chelsea is very sweet and social with people, greeting every person who comes to her kennel with a big smile and a wiggly body. She adores the company of humans, loves to cuddle, loves to get pets and attention, and would be a dream outside of the shelter environment. Chelsea shouldn’t have to pay for her cruel abandonment with her life. She would be so happy in an experienced foster or adoptive home where she could get some peace and quiet, decompress, and a semblance of normalcy that she craves. She’d shine! Don’t let this adorable girl die. Hurry and MESSAGE OUR PAGE FOR ASSISTANCE saving her life.

Medical Behavior Rating: 3. Yellow

AT RISK NOTE:
Chelsea is on emergency placement for behavioral reasons. Chelsea arrived to the care centers as a stray after being adopted years before. In the care centers, she has been social with handlers and is highly active. However, due to high levels of stress, Chelsea has begun vocalizing high-pitched when exiting the kennel room. She is highly anxious at the care center, screaming when in the building hallway. She has also reacted to other dog's kennels while passing them and then redirected towards the handler, jumping up and snapping at the handler. Outside of the building, she has been social with handler and sought contact with them, allowing petting. Medically, she is underweight and has moderate PDDZ.

ENRICHMENT NOTES

5/23/23:
Chelsea is at the front of the kennel with a loose, wiggly body. She is leashed, and going through the kennel room lunges, barks, and screeches towards the other kennels. At the end of the room, she jumps up towards the handler, spinning around and snapping. Handler holds her away and she again jumps towards the handler, spinning and snapping. A second person who is nearby sees this and presses the pet corrector, which startles her and she stops and looks towards that person. Treats are tossed to her and she is walked outside. Once out, she pulls moderately on the leash and does not react to any stimuli she passes. She is brought back inside on a double leash as a precaution and returned to the kennel.

5/21/23:
Chelsea has a loose, wiggly body at the front of the kennel. She is easily leashed and taken out to the hallway, where she screams loudly at first, then stops. She is walked to the street, where she quickly relieves herself and explores her environment, sniffing around. She approaches handlers with a soft body and allows petting. Chelsea is brought back to her kennel and returned without issue.

5/21/23:
Chelsea is at the front of the kennel with a loose wiggly body. She is easily leashed and removed from kennel. As she exits the room she begins to screech and vocalize in the hall. A second handler tosses a second leash on her out of caution and she is taken to the yard. Once in the yard she settles down and is then taken for a street walk and the second leash is removed. Chelsea is social with handler and allows petting. She is returned to her kennel without issue.

5/20/23:
Observed to become frantic, flailing, vocalizing/screaming while being walked in hallway by other staff

ENERGY LEVEL::
We have no history on Chelsea so we cannot be certain of her behavior in a home environment. At the care center, she displays a high level of activity. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct her energy and enthusiasm.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 4

Recommendations::
No children (under 13)

Recommendations comments::
No young children: Due to the level of anxiety displayed at the care center, we recommend a home without young children.

Potential challenges:
Anxiety
On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration
Basic manners/poor impulse control

Potential challenges comments::

Anxiety: Chelsea displays anxious behavior at the care center, whining and crying during intake and, at times, while outside of the kennel with handlers, especially when exiting the kennel room. If she displays this behavior in a new home, see handout on Anxiety.

Basic manners/poor impulse control: Chelsea jumps up often on handlers in a social manner. See handout on Basic manners/poor impulse control.

On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration: Chelsea has some reactivity when being walked out of the kennel room and the potential to redirect this towards the handler, turning towards the handler and snapping. Please see handout on On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration.
