Flying over Balmorhea State Park 📸

The park was opened in 1968, and is the world’s largest spring-fed swimming pool. The spring has a constant flow of 22 to 28 million US gallons (110,000 m3) a day, so no chlorination is required. The water temperature ranges from 72 to 76 °F (22 to 24 °C) and is up to 30 feet (9.1 m) deep.

Located just 45 miles southwest of Odessa-Schleymeyer Field is the decommissioned Pyote Air Force Base. It was an operational base from 1942-1955 before converting to a military radar facility.

It was nicknamed “Rattlesnake Bomber Base” for the numerous rattlesnake dens that were uncovered during its construction.

At the height of its use in 1944, the base had over 6,000 officers and enlisted men, either permanently assigned or temporarily attached. In addition, hundreds of civilians came from all over the United States to work on the base.

After World War II, thousands of reserve aircraft were stored there, one of which was the B-29 Enola Gay.

So cool to be able to see this piece of aviation history so close by!

He battled shifting winds and a transient pilot making radio calls for an intersecting runway then landing on a different one, but Terry handled it with ease!

We have another student solo on our hands! 🎉 Keith took to the skies for his first solo flight yesterday evening! 🛫

The conditions were challenging, with winds blowing 17 knots gusting up to 25 at one point. But we knew if anyone could handle it, Keith could! The FBO even recognized the skill he was displaying and gave him praise over the radio saying: “You’re a student solo?! Wow that’s incredible! Great landings!” 🙌

Congratulations to Phil Lawson on his FIRST SOLO! 🎉

Phil has consistently demonstrated the knowledge, skill, and dedication it takes through training to become a private pilot 👨‍✈️. It paid off in a big way for him this morning as he took to the skies solo for the very first time. This is a huge milestone in any pilot’s journey and the Sky’s Edge team couldn’t be more proud of him!

Commercial student, Aldo, knocking out one of his 10 night takeoffs and landings at a towered airfield at Midland International (KMAF)! 🛬

We got bumped to the small runway, 16L, while a C-130 joined the pattern on 16R. If you look closely 🔎, you can see it on final near the blinking red tower in the first 15 seconds!

One of our Instrument students flying the Localizer 17R approach into Abilene Regional (KABI) on a night cross-country flight! It was a great chance for the student to fly a new approach while talking to Air Traffic Control!
