Controlled Burn Conducted Today at Wildflower Meadows

When Keith and Duff Schroeder built Wildflower Meadows in DeWitt, they were required to keep all of the stormwater on site. This led to them creating retention gardens and depositing the soil into large mounds that surround the entire community.

They chose to seed the hills in indigenous wildflowers with input from natural planting specialists, Pollack Design Associates. To encourage the native species, occasional "controlled burns" need to be conducted. This process burns off the shallow-rooted w**ds and grasses allowing the native flowers to thrive. "It is a unique concept," stated Duff Schroeder. "These native plants grow root systems up to 36 inches deep so they are not killed by the fire."

This burn was safely conducted with the cooperation and approval of the City of Dewitt Fire Department. A prescribed burn is a safe, carefully controlled fire that burns off shallow-rooted w**ds. Few alternative methods can compete with fire from the standpoint of effectiveness and cost.

Two results are achieved with a prescribed burn. First, the burnt area is left with a black surface that is rich in nutrients. Solar heat is then absorbed by the darkened surface, quickly warming the soil and allowing the native plants to flourish and blossom. The second benefit is that the desired plants and flowers are now able to grow without competing w**ds consuming the resources in the soil.

Conducted by licensed professionals, the fire will burn all the surface growth and eradicate the w**ds that have shallow root systems. Burned areas re-green very rapidly. "Wildflower Meadows conducted the first prescribed burn in the greater Lansing area in 2007. Fire is a natural process that cleanses landscapes of invasive species without having to resort to chemical fertilizers and w**d control, providing a healthy environment for Michigan's prairie lands. I think people will be intrigued by the results," stated Schroeder
